Haile Selassie, the emperor of Ethiopia, sits mounted in this 1935 view taken in Addis Ababa, with a ring of bodyguards around him. The date places the picture in the tense months before Italy's invasion of Ethiopia later that year, when the emperor's public appearances carried added weight as signs of national resolve. Horses were central to imperial ceremony in the capital, and the riders' formation and the emperor's upright posture give the scene a deliberate, formal character. The photograph is a useful record of how the monarch presented himself to the public on the eve of war.
