A rider on horseback moves ahead of a locomotive along 11th Avenue, the Manhattan street where freight trains once ran at street level beside the city's busy docks. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified notes kept by the Bain News Service, the press agency whose photographs make up the George Grantham Bain Collection. Men on horseback, often called West Side cowboys, rode ahead of these trains to warn pedestrians, wagon drivers and children, a practice that gave the avenue its nickname, Death Avenue. The picture is worth a close look for its street traffic and for the role a working horse played in the city's rail system.
