Central Park's riding ring stood among the park's bridle paths, which Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux laid out in the 1850s to separate horseback riders and carriages from pedestrians. Riding in the park was a fashionable pastime for New Yorkers, and the bridle paths drew riders from the city's wealthy families and the stables that served them. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The Bain News Service, a photo agency active in New York in the early twentieth century, made it, though the record does not give a date, and the title comes from unverified caption data.
