This glass negative is one of the many Bain News Service images of New York City that the George Grantham Bain Collection holds at the Library of Congress. Its title, Central Park Horseback Riding, comes from caption information the Bain agency wrote on the negative or its card, which the Library notes has not been independently verified, so the exact rider, date, and location within the park remain uncertain. Central Park has long had a bridle path winding through its woodland and meadows, and riding there was a familiar pastime for city residents, especially in the early twentieth century. The picture offers a glimpse of how urban recreation and horses shared city life before the automobile took over the park's roads.
