A riding ring inside Central Park sets this view apart from the park's many scenes of carriages and strollers. Central Park's designers, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, built a separate bridle path into the original 1858 plan, and by the late 1800s horseback riding there was a fashionable pastime for New Yorkers of means. The picture is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the Bain News Service's archive of news photographs made mostly in the early 1900s. The record gives no date, and its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact moment is uncertain.
