Edward Penfield's poster presents a Kentucky breaking cart, a light two-wheeled vehicle used to accustom young or untrained horses to harness and to being driven. Kentucky's long reputation for raising and training horses makes it a fitting setting for such a cart. The poster belongs to Penfield's Country Carts series, published in New York by R.H. Russell around 1900, when Penfield was one of the leading American poster designers, known for flat, boldly outlined areas of color.
