Two girls, a horse and a dog share the frame in this chromolithograph, which makes it a domestic scene rather than a portrait of a famous horse or an event. Chromolithography, a process that layered several color stones to build up a printed image, was a popular way to bring affordable color art into American homes in the 1870s. The Western Art Association published prints like this one in Chicago around 1873, and the record credits the design to Armstrong & Co. Genre subjects such as children with animals were especially common in these prints, offering middle-class buyers cheerful, sentimental pictures for the parlor wall.
