Edward Penfield's poster for *Harper's September* turns a magazine announcement into a scene of carriages and coachmen, with the driver and horses set against flat fields of color. Dated to about 1897, it belongs to the flowering of American poster art in the 1890s, when illustrators borrowed the bold outlines and simplified shapes of French affiches. Penfield did much of his best-known work for Harper & Brothers, and his clean design helped a monthly periodical stand out on crowded city billboards. The poster shows how commercial art of the period could also work as decoration.
