Rather than a scene of the road itself, this 1899 color poster pairs a woman with a carriage, the combination its subject headings name alongside transportation. It advertised the August issue of a Harper's publication from the New York firm Harper & Brothers, whose magazines reached a broad middle-class readership at the close of the nineteenth century. Color posters were still a fairly new tool in American publishing, and their bright printing was meant to catch the eye on city streets and in shop windows. The horse-drawn carriage here reflects the leisure and fashion of the period, when a summer drive was a familiar image of genteel life.
