Made for the Münchener Rennverein, Munich's racing club, this color poster promotes the horse races that drew crowds to the city's track in the years before the First World War. Ludwig Hohlwein, one of Germany's leading poster designers of the period, created it, and his bold, simplified shapes and strong color suited the quick reading a street poster required. Printed in Munich around 1909 by the Vereinigte Druckereien & Kunstanstalten, it shows how racing was promoted to the public in early twentieth-century Germany, with its jockeys and horses reduced to clear, eye-catching forms.
