Printed as a tobacco label, this color engraving makes a racing mare its centerpiece under the title *The Queen of the Trotting Turf*. Seth Halsey of Lynchburg, Virginia, made it, and Lynchburg was a significant tobacco manufacturing town in the years before the Civil War. Trotting matches, in which horses pulled light sulkies at a steady gait, drew large crowds across the country in the 1850s, and tobacco makers often borrowed such popular enthusiasms to sell their goods. The label shows how a sporting image could help a brand stand out on a crowded shop shelf.
