Ludwig Hohlwein, one of Germany's best-known poster designers, created this advertisement for the Münchener Rennverein, the Munich racing club, with jockeys and horse racing as its subject. Hohlwein's work of the late 1920s and 1930s relied on bold outlines, flat areas of color, and simplified figures that could be read quickly from a street kiosk or railway platform. The poster's date is uncertain and is recorded only as approximately 1930. Racing was a fashionable public entertainment in Germany between the wars, and clubs like this one depended on posters such as this to draw crowds to their meetings.
