Edward Penfield's poster for the November issue of *Harper's* is one of many he made for the magazine in the 1890s, and its catalog record names horses as its subject. Penfield designed a run of monthly *Harper's* posters, using flat areas of color, bold outlines, and simplified shapes that made them readable from across a street. Posters like this were a major part of American magazine advertising at the time, and they helped establish commercial illustration as a respected art form. The poster's date of 1897 places it in the decade when color lithography was becoming cheap enough for mass display.
