Straw-colored sun hats fitted over the heads of working horses set this picture apart from ordinary street scenes of the period. Around 1907, horses still pulled delivery wagons, streetcars, and carts through American cities, and they had little protection from summer heat. Animal shelters and humane societies of the era pushed for better care of these animals, and small measures like shade and head coverings were part of that effort. The record's date comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified, so the exact day should be read with that in mind.
