Few pictures on this board tie a horse scene so directly to a railroad's promotion. The record credits the image to F.M. Steel and gives a copyright held for the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway, abbreviated C.R.I. & P. The title, "Obedient horses," suggests animals responding calmly to their handlers. Railroads of around 1905 often commissioned images like this to advertise their service and the farm country along their lines. The details come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so the setting is worth checking against the cited source, *America's Yesterday's*, pages 32 and 33.
