Captioned "Skaguay," the spelling of the period, this cabinet card shows a blacksmith shoeing horses in a clearing among the trees near the town, which was then the main supply point for prospectors bound for the Klondike. Winter & Pond of Juneau made the photograph around 1897, just as the gold rush was building. Pack animals hauled goods over the rough trails toward the Chilkoot and White Pass, and many did not survive the journey, so reliable shoeing was essential work. The studio's copyright registration printed on the mount helps date the image.
