A horse-drawn cab operated under the name of T. Tilling, a London firm, carries a boy riding inside alongside its driver. Tilling's company ran a large fleet of horse-drawn vehicles in the city during the late 1800s, when cabs and omnibuses were the main means of getting around London before motor transport arrived. The print is probably the work of John Thomson, a Scottish photographer known for his street documentary views of London, and its date of 1884 is a best estimate. The image offers a record of everyday street traffic and the working life of the city's cab trade.
