Few posters of the period promised as much as this lithograph for Prof. E.K. Crocker's educated horses, ponies, donkeys and mules, which lists scenes including a court room, a school room, and a musical pony. Printed in 1899 by the Courier Litho. Co. of Buffalo, New York, it shows animals moving in three separate rings with nothing to guide them, and a pony skipping rope. Trained-animal acts like this were a staple of American circuses and variety stages in the late nineteenth century, when audiences paid to watch animals seem to follow human routines on their own.
