Edward Kelley Crocker's troupe of educated animals, as this title names them, was a fixture of American circus and variety stages in the late 1800s, when horses were still the main form of transport and draft power. The title lists horses, ponies, donkeys and mules, which sets the act apart from simpler horse shows: the trainer worked with several kinds of equines at once, asking each to perform tricks in front of audiences. Trained-animal acts like this one drew large crowds and reflected a public fascination with animal intelligence and the skill of the handler. Look closely at the title's billing, since such posters often emphasized the trainer's name as much as the animals.
