The American flag flying from this ship's rigging sets it apart from the many Japanese views of Western vessels. Woodblock artists produced a steady stream of such sheets after Commodore Matthew Perry's squadron entered Edo Bay in 1853 and returned the following year, pressing Japan to open its ports. Printmakers often worked from secondhand reports and sketches, so foreign hulls, rigging and smoke were frequently drawn with a mix of curiosity and exaggeration. Notice how such artists often set these unfamiliar shapes against the stylized wave patterns of older Japanese prints.
