A woodblock print of a kabuki actor has been pasted onto a page of handwritten album text, so the image and the writing share the same sheet. That pairing is what sets this piece apart from a loose print. Collectors often mounted prints this way in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, using albums to record favorite performers, theater seasons, or travels. The print itself follows the long tradition of ukiyo-e, in which artists produced affordable images of actors in their famous roles, and the handwritten notes add a personal layer that reveals how the prints were once enjoyed and kept.
