Minamoto no Tametomo, the twelfth-century archer known here by his nickname Chinzei Hachirō, appears in this narrow hosoban sheet with the bow that made him famous in Japanese legend. He fought on the losing side of the Hōgen Rebellion in 1156 and was later exiled to Izu Ōshima, where his reputation as a giant archer grew. Printed in benizuri-e, a red-and-green technique used before full-color printing, the woodcut dates to roughly 1764 to 1772, when Edo artists were refining the color prints that would soon dominate the market.
