Lacquer and powdered metal give this narrow hosoban woodcut its unusual shine. The technique, called *urushi-e*, used glossy lacquer and metallic dust to make parts of the design glitter against the color printing. The sheet shows kabuki actors, including Sawamura Sōjūrō, and is attributed to Okumura Toshinobu, who was active in Edo around the 1720s and 1730s. Its printer, Ōmiya Kyūbei of Hasegawa-chō, places the print between 1716 and 1736. Such actor prints were popular souvenirs of the theater, and the lacquer work was costly, so it was reserved for special sheets.
