The sitter is Ichimura Takenojō, the fourth actor to hold that stage name, shown in the role of a flower seller, the *hanauri* of the title. Prints like this one were sold to Edo playgoers as keepsakes of popular actors and their best-known roles. The glossy black accents, applied by hand in a technique called *urushi-e*, give the figure a lacquer-like sheen. The narrow *hosoban* format and hand-applied color reflect the early eighteenth-century theater portrait tradition of ukiyo-e.
