Unlike the woodblock prints that fill most collections of Japanese art, this is an original drawing in ink with light washes of color, signed by an artist named Kyuro. It shows a woman with a young child and an infant, a scene of everyday family life that Edo-period artists returned to often. The date is uncertain, estimated between about 1750 and 1810, a period when ukiyo-e artists were refining images of domestic and female subjects for a growing urban audience. Its inclusion in a Library of Congress exhibition on the floating world suggests it was valued as a rare, hand-made counterpart to the printed images that spread those themes.
