Fukurokuju is one of the seven gods of good fortune in Japanese tradition, and this drawing shows him standing and turned to the left, with the long-headed, elderly figure his iconography calls for. The sheet is a small ink-and-color wash on thin handmade paper, one of a group of studies once bound together and loosely associated with the Hokusai school. Such sketchbook pages were often used by artists to work out figures and poses before they reached finished prints or paintings, so this sheet offers a glimpse of the drawing practice behind the more polished images of the period.
