In this woodcut, two long-necked creatures turn on a customer at a noodle stall, a scene that is part nightmare and part joke. It comes from *Kyōsai hyakuzu*, a sketchbook by the painter Kawanabe Kyōsai, whose fondness for the bizarre, the satirical, and the supernatural made him one of the most inventive artists of late Edo. Such books were printed in quantity for a broad urban readership, so the image reflects street life in the capital as much as the artist's imagination. The record dates it to around 1863, and the title is a cataloger's description rather than an original caption.
