Two long-necked creatures loom over a customer at a noodle shop, their stretched necks curling through the scene and turning an ordinary meal strange. The figures resemble rokurokubi, long-necked yokai from Japanese folklore said to appear to people at night. The artist, Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831–1889), was known for comic and supernatural subjects, and this ink and watercolor was published in a book of his sketches. It was later shown in a 2001 Library of Congress exhibition on ukiyo-e themes of shadows, dreams, and substance.
