The long-haired ghost in this print belongs to one of the most recognizable figures in Japanese popular imagery: the yūrei, a restless spirit from folklore and theater. Pale robes, loose black hair, and a drooping posture mark this type of figure, which grew especially popular in the nineteenth century, when printmakers and kabuki stage designers drew heavily on ghost stories. Woodblock artists of that era used bold outlines and carefully graded color to make the spirit feel both eerie and elegant. Look closely at the hair and the folds of the garment, where the carved lines do much of the work of suggesting movement and dread.
