A long, sinuous monster coils across the sheet, with small human figures gathered around it and a cat placed among them. Scenes like this belong to the yokai tradition in Japanese woodblock printing, where spirits and monsters from folklore were popular subjects during the Edo period. Each color was carved into its own wooden block and pressed onto paper by hand, a labor-intensive method that let publishers reach many buyers. The cat, long tied to luck and the supernatural in Japanese lore, adds an unexpected touch of humor to the scene.
