A skeleton rising out of a red boat sets this print apart from the landscapes and actor portraits that fill most woodblock collections. Skeletons appear often in Japanese art of the late Edo and Meiji periods, when artists drew on folklore about the dead returning to the living world, and this image draws on that tradition for a startling, theatrical effect. Printmakers of the era cut a separate block for each color and inked them in turn, so the saturated red of the boat stands out sharply against the paper. Look closely at the fine carved lines of the figure's ribs and the water around the hull to see the craft of the printer's work.
