Here a yamachichi, a mountain creature from Japanese folklore, looms over a sleeping traveler, a scene that drew on the belief that such yokai lurked in remote hills and preyed on people resting in isolated places. Images of yokai like this one grew popular in the Edo period, when illustrated books and woodblock prints made supernatural creatures familiar to ordinary readers. Toriyama Sekien's encyclopedic yokai catalogs of the 1770s and 1780s were especially influential, and later artists kept the tradition alive, using bold outlines and dramatic tension to turn folk fears into vivid, memorable scenes.
