A seated figure before a round mirror is the detail that sets this print apart from the many beauty scenes on the same board. Japanese woodblock artists of the Edo and Meiji periods often used mirrors, combs and lacquered boxes to suggest a quiet domestic moment, and a man in that setting was less common than a woman at her toilette. Prints like this were made by carving a design into cherrywood blocks, one for each color, then pressing ink and paper together by hand. Look closely at the inked outlines and the gradations in the background, which show how much skill a single sheet could demand from the carver and printer.
