Moonlight falls across a pair of pine branches set beside a column of calligraphy, a pairing that Japanese printmakers often used to suggest quiet, seasonal reflection. Pine, which stays green through winter, carried associations with longevity and steadfastness, while the full moon offered a familiar emblem of autumn and of the poetic mood that accompanied moon-viewing. Works combining natural motifs with inscribed verse drew on the literati tradition, in which a poem written by hand was read as part of the image itself. Look closely at the calligraphy, since its brushwork and placement shape the composition as much as the moon does.
