Willows trail over a misty river in this ink landscape, with a calligraphy page set alongside it as a counterpart. In East Asian scholarly tradition, painting and writing were understood as sister arts, both practiced with the same brush and ink, and pairing a landscape with a text was a way of inviting the viewer to read the image and the words together. Ink monochrome work of this kind favored suggestion over detail, so the soft, dissolving forms of the willows and water leave much to the eye. The pairing of image and script is worth noticing as a clue to how such pages were meant to be enjoyed, held in the hand and studied slowly.
