Morning glory vines wind across the sheet in this Japanese woodblock print, a flower that drew close attention from artists in the Edo period. Morning glories (asagao) were prized for blooming early and fading by midday, and by the early 1800s growers in Edo were breeding them into ever more elaborate forms, which made the blossom a popular subject in woodblock prints. Printmakers of the era built their color through successive carved blocks, each inked separately, so the layered blues, reds and greens here reflect a careful, multi-step process. Look closely at the tight spacing of the leaves and tendrils, which shows how the artist balanced delicate line work against flat areas of color.
