Two armored warriors stand beneath a tangle of gourd vines, a pairing of martial dress with a quiet, domestic plant that gives the scene an unexpected calm. Woodblock prints like this one were produced in Japan mainly from the 1600s through the 1800s, when artists and publishers turned out inexpensive images of warriors, actors, and landscapes for a broad urban audience. Armored figures were especially popular during the Edo period, when samurai were a ruling class that had long since stopped fighting many battles, so such scenes often mixed heroic nostalgia with decorative style. Look closely at the carved lines of the armor and the way the vines are arranged across the upper part of the composition.
