A Kabuki actor posed in armour is the detail that sets this print apart from the many theater portraits in its category. Actors in such roles were typically shown in the bold, stylized costumes of samurai plays, with thick padding, lacquered plates and dramatic makeup that signaled heroic or villainous characters to audiences. Japanese woodblock printmakers of the Edo period produced these portraits, often called yakusha-e, as collectible images that let theatregoers keep a memory of favorite performers. Look closely at the carved lines of the armour and the layered colors, which show how the printing process built up a surface that was both graphic and theatrical.
