Gathered around a room lit by a hundred candles, the figures in this two-page color woodcut are shown at the game of the hundred-tale ghost story gathering, or *hyakumonogatari kaidankai*. In the custom, each teller recounts a ghost story and then snuffs one flame, so the room grows darker as the night goes on. The tradition dates to the Edo period, and by 1890, in the early Meiji era, it was familiar enough to be a favorite subject for printmakers who drew on older tales of spirits and dreams.
