An open illustrated book, with its pages turned to show the kettle and the tanuki, sets this scene at the heart of the Bunbuku Chagama folktale. In the story, a poor priest buys an old iron kettle that turns out to be inhabited by a tanuki, a raccoon dog from Japanese folklore known for shape-shifting. The tale was told for generations and printed in picture books for children, and its kettle is often linked to the ironware of Morioka. Notice how the artist balances the humor of the animal's transformation with the everyday domestic setting of a tea kettle over a hearth.
