Wooden puppets coming to life and squaring off give this two-page color woodcut its playful edge. Dated 1841, it dates from the Tenpo era, when Japanese publishers produced illustrated books and single sheets full of comic and fantastic scenes. Puppet theater was a familiar entertainment, so a story of figures that suddenly move and fight would have amused viewers and unsettled them a little at the same time.
