Warehouses and inns line the main street of Ōmihachiman in this drawing, which shows a working thoroughfare rather than a scenic view. Ōmihachiman, in present-day Shiga Prefecture, grew up as a castle town and trading center near Lake Biwa, and its storehouses and lodgings reflect the commerce that moved goods and travelers through the region. Merchants from the surrounding Ōmi region were well known across Japan in this period, and their buildings were a visible sign of that wealth. The two sheets date to about 1840, capturing the town's streetscape in the decades before the Meiji era reshaped Japanese cities.
