Rickshaws, horseback riders, boatmen, and farmers share one scene in this 1870 woodcut, a mix that captures Japan in the early Meiji period. The jinrikisha, a two-wheeled passenger cart pulled by a runner, had only recently appeared on Japanese streets, so its place beside older forms of travel and labor is worth noticing. The sheet is one panel of a triptych whose other two parts are lost, and it was made by artists working in the Utagawa school, a tradition of color woodblock printing long devoted to scenes of everyday life.
