Rather than focusing on a single bird, this color woodcut gathers several kinds on one sheet, a format that draws on the older Japanese tradition of bird-and-flower pictures known as *kachō-e*. Dated 1890, during the Meiji period, it was printed on *hōsho*, a sturdy handmade paper that holds color well. The record credits three artists, Toyohara Kunichika, Utagawa Kuniaki and Utagawa Toyokuni, which reflects how woodblock studios often carried on names and styles from earlier masters as the craft faced new competition from photography and lithography.
