The subject here is the fighting at the Hamaguri Gate of Kyoto's Imperial Palace in the summer of 1864, when forces from the Chōshū domain tried to force their way into the palace grounds and were driven back. The fighting set off fires that spread through the city and destroyed large parts of it, and the scene's smoke and flames convey that disaster. Dated 1893, the print was made nearly three decades after the event, when Japanese artists often revisited the upheavals of the late Tokugawa period.
