Rather than the fighting itself, this color woodcut focuses on the work of rebuilding after the Hamaguri Gate Incident of 1864, when armed clashes near Kyoto's imperial palace set off fires that destroyed large parts of the city. Dated 1893, the print looks back on that recovery nearly three decades later, during the Meiji era, when Japan was reshaping its capital and its public image. Its emphasis on construction makes it a useful view of how Kyoto's wartime past was remembered as well as how the city was physically rebuilt.
