The subject here is Kantarō of Sanjō, a figure tied in the record to a performance setting, which sets this sheet apart from the many actor portraits on this board. It is a narrow hosoban woodcut in color, and the catalog describes it as possibly the left panel of a triptych titled *Fūryū kenjin sanpukutsui*, or "A Triptych of Modern Clever People." The title bar credits Torii Kiyomasu and the "Urogataya" studio, a label that points to the early 1700s Torii workshop tradition. Its urushi-e, or "lacquer picture," style used glossy, lacquer-like pigments to give the color a richer finish than standard prints.
