A courtesan kneels at a folding screen, brush in hand, painting a picture across its panels. The subject was a favorite of early Edo-period woodblock artists, who liked to show the leisure and routines of the pleasure quarters, where women of the licensed districts were expected to be skilled in calligraphy, painting, and poetry as well as in entertaining. Scenes like this one mixed a private, domestic moment with the glamour of the brothel world, and they were sold to a city audience eager to see how such women lived. The catalog dates the print to between 1704 and 1711, which places it in the Genroku and Hōei years, a period when Japanese color and print culture was expanding rapidly.
