This vertical triptych shows the actors Hachimantarō Yoshiie and Abe Sadatō's wife, Sodehagi, in a scene from a Kabuki history drama. Its three sheets form one continuous composition, and the record names the artist as Toyokuni, with a signature noted on the print. Plays of this kind drew on the 11th-century conflicts of the Zenkunen era, when the warrior Minamoto no Yoshiie fought the Abe clan in northern Japan. Actor prints like this one were made for fans of the theater in the 1840s, and they preserve how performers presented their roles and costumes to the public.
