Few triptychs of this period bring together three figures from the same tale as this one does, showing actors in the roles of Hachimantarō Yoshiie, Abe Sadatō, and Sadatō's wife, Sodehagi. The story draws on the legends of the Former Nine Years' War in northern Japan, a conflict that theater audiences of the 1840s knew well. The signature, which reads as painted on request, names the designer as Toyokuni, the name later used by Kunisada, one of the most prolific print designers of the era. The sheets, dated to about 1847 or 1848, show how actor prints of the period combined a dramatic story with the individual likenesses that fans wanted to keep.
